A Different History Analysis Essay
In the poem “A Different History” by Sujata Bhatt, the poet addresses about culture identity, the value of language, and faith. Bhatt describes the history of India during the British colonization days, from her perspective – from the side from the oppressed. Her strong diction portrays her emotions clearly. The varied structure and develop between the two stanzas of the poem illustrates the differences involving the cultures and emotions she gets. Bhatt makes an impression of freedom and peace the moment she identifies her nation in the first stanza. The two lines, “Here, the gods roam widely, ” “Every tree is usually sacred” identify the Indian culture. They will represent the “old India”, before the Uk had overcome it. Yet , in the next range, the feelings of the composition differs. The poet stresses how wrong it is to disrespect books (nature) with the duplication of the terms “a sin”. It shows a different part to the Of india culture – one with customs and rules that needs to be followed. Bhatt addresses her own tradition, (ll. 9-14) as it could symbolize the importance of retaining the firm and faith based beliefs from the Indian traditions. Towards the end of the 1st stanza, the poem’s tone changes as one that is extremely pleading. There is also a distinct change from a very quiet tone to the interrogative one particular. “You need to learn how to switch the web pages gently / without disturbing Sarasvati, / without annoying the shrub / by whose real wood the paper was made. ” She seems as though she's commanding, to be more exact begging the oppressors to tread casually, to adjust slowly to her traditions, and to learn how to be gentle with this. This is the big difference between the earlier lines – at first the lady was handling her lifestyle, but in these kinds of lines the girl with referring to the British. The lady uses the terms “books”, “paper”, and “wood” to refer to her lifestyle. The “tree” represents her ancestors, and “the paper” represents the near future generation. These comparisons include a strong result; they make the reader think about the approach he or she is dealing with nature. Inside the second stanza, Bhatt indents to highlight the between the 2 things she’s discussing. The initial stanza discusses how precious books happen to be and how they should be respected. It offers us an insight to India’s old culture. On the other hand, initially of the next stanza, the girl speaks about language as well as the “new India”. Bhatt begins the second stanza with rhetorical questions. “Which language / has not been the oppressor’s tongue? / Which language as well as truly meant to murder an individual? ” The poet is trying to point out that many languages end up being the language of your country since they were when the language of the people that overcome them. She's referring to the loss of her indigenous language. This adds a tinge of humor and mockery, since she is previously speaking in English. The poem ends with an ironic affirmation. “the uncreated, unbegotten, unconceived grandchildren as well as grow to love that strange dialect. ” Bhatt refers to himself as the “unborn grandchildren”. After revealing her thoughts of anger about the murder of her language, she continue to writes in English – she still grew to love the The english language language. Bhatt clearly expresses what she gets about her culture. She shows that despite the fact that her tradition is being demolished and forgotten because of overseas conquerors, the lady still remembers her motherland and the beginnings that link her to it. Throughout the different organized sections, the lady was able to demonstrate readers the difference in tradition and feelings she has.
