Often a film conveys a message in regards to a character through various film techniques. This is true in the film “In The Father”. This kind of story is mainly about a child who is arrested for a crime he would not commit and how a romance between father and boy deepens through the entire tragedy. The key character, Gerry Conlon, will be portrayed for the viewer while an unruly rebel although is after developed into a more docile and compliant character. The director, Jim Sheridon, uses film techniques such as costume design and style, dialogue and extended metaphors to convey the introduction of Gerry like a character. 1st paragraph: -1st time we come across gerry, scruffy, uncut -costume design – baggy skinny jeans, long locks, dirty overall look -gives proven fact that gerry doesn’t care about his appearance or what people think about him -as film advances he sharpens up appearance -combed taken back curly hair 2nd: -change also demonstrated through conversation -lawyer requests him in the event that he is frightened of the the courtroom: -he responses “i only don’t wish to be humiliated again” -this quick piece of dialogue shows that this individual has now altered and does proper care what other folks think of him -helps viewer understand how anxious an innocent man may be in the fight for justice third: -use of extended metaphor -viewer sees lawyer gareth pierce generating through a very long tunnel whilst listening to gerrys story -this could be seen as an extended metaphor for the long dark road gerry has gone down while preventing the legal system -as the story attracts to a summary she gets to the end in the tunnel, and also the ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ -could label the point in the story wherever gerry plus the others are finally set free
