Labeling theory and its effects to the society Essay
Marking theory is a theory that tries to explain the effects of “labeling” by the culture on an person. It demonstrates that: by marking an individual one example is as outrageous, that could indicate the beginning of the process of him getting insane. It is therefore important for contemporary society to be very careful on the product labels that they give to individuals due to effects which can be likely to include this “labels”. This daily news is going to look into the components of labeling theory as well as effects. Marking Theory Labels theory discusses the influence that the world has on the development of a certain habit by a person because of the society’s perception of him/her. The way an individual have been described and categorized by the public can greatly impact the behavior of the said individual. It also brings out the linguistic tendency in the majority in society to label those people who are perceived to get minority or perhaps with actions different from the remainder, negative product labels. According for this theory, the stigmatizing or perhaps negative labels given to these individuals have a tremendous effect on them such that some of the individuals may possibly proceed to staying deviant (Becker, 1964). A good example is somebody who is recognized to be a medication addict. Set up drugs will not affects his professional life, when individuals whom they will work with arrive to know that they use drugs, they may commence avoiding and associating them with all other criminal activity that are done by drug addicts. Because of this stigmatization, the person may conclude loosing the work and could be unable to secure a good job in a other place. This will leave him without other option other than including in crime for survival, something which this individual could not possess gotten him self in were it not to get stigmatization and labels that have been directed to them (Becker, 1963). According to Becker (1963), the process of labeling cannot be believed to be purely right because if so , it could havent considered the standard rule of deviance which can be: it is the society that makes it. The society may create some social guidelines and apply them to several given individuals without proper account. Their claims cannot be validated because there is an opportunity that the person may not be the particular society interprets him/her being. Other offenders may be blessed to go without being noticed by people and you cannot say that just because we were holding able to avoid unseen, they can be clean and simply cannot qualify to become deviant or perhaps those who have been labeled are typical the same. The reason is , there may be fake accusations. The idea may affect the society in many ways. It may lead to increased offense rate between individuals and society. The reason is , of the result that the theory has on someone like in the example previously mentioned of a medication addict that will be forced to engage in dangerous actions because of splendour by the persons around them. It may also serve as an example to other visitors to avoid committing crimes taking into consideration the condemnation engaged after carrying out the offense (Becker, 1964). Victims of the theory can also become patients of personal fulfilled vaticinate. Because of the notion that the contemporary society has on these individuals, they may set out to change all their behavior to this which the society has tagged them to have got either intentionally or unconsciously. An example is a homosexual specific. Being a homosexual may not have an impact on an individual’s professional existence, but if his colleagues become aware of that truth, it may be challenging for the said person to comfortably work as a result his work will also suffer as a result. Poor results in the task place have been brought about by splendour that an individual has received by his acquaintances because of the ingredients label of a “homosexual” that he had acquired. Although the individuals can be determined to perform things proper, it may be difficult to abide by that (Becker, 1963). Although this theory might bring about positive influences in society in a way that others may well learn from subjects, it makes victims to get more deviant. This could be due to lack of support from the people around the patients making lifestyle more unbearable for them pushing them further more into offense. References Becker, H. S i9000. (1963).
