United States and Authoritarian Patriotism Essay
Inside the article Governmental policies and Patriotism in Education, Joel Westheimer made an obvious distinction of what it means to follow “authoritarian patriotism” and “democratic patriotism. ” The author describes authoritarian patriotism as the belief that one’s nation is inherently superior to other folks and nonquestioning loyalty to ones region, leaders and support these people unconditionally. For the opposing part Westheimer specifies democratic patriotism as the belief that a nation’s ideals will be worthy of admiration and admiration and the questioning deliberative general care for those of society based on particular principles. Westheimer felt the need to clarify the distinction with the two varieties of patriotism since it seems as though patriotism is beginning to be forced upon the folks and primarily the students, and if people actually second suppose the government’s decisions they shall be condemned by his or her colleagues and acquaintances. Throughout the document there were a lot of examples of the wrongful consequence subjected upon teachers to get giving youngsters a different perspective and each period they were cured like outcast and forced to reinstate every thing if they will wanted to retain their job. It is obvious to say that Westheimer put these good examples in the document to show how this is no more the land of the totally free if people are being forced to present themselves because patriotic and believe that America can carry out no wrong. It seems as if once 9/11 happened, it was like a gateway event pertaining to governmental representatives to bring in the practice of patriotism to learners. There were multiple bills exceeded in multiple states designating patriotic procedures and allocating funding to get courses specifically designed to inform registrants of why it can be good to become an American. It seems as if the writer believes the authoritarian patriotism is becoming more popularly utilized in schools is because the us government made it necessary to learn about how exactly “good” America is, and if you choose to consider otherwise you're going to be punished in a single form yet another. The perfect model for Severe patriotism inside the article was when the 18 year old David form Co was hanging for posting flyers regarding having a peaceful rally up against the war in Iraq. This case makes 1 think, how can one love thy country in case the country is definitely opposed to beneficial criticism? Or how can one like thy state if the very thing America was found on, in relation to life and liberty for any, does not apply at decision making to get the taxpaying citizens? Following reading this document I truly trust in what Westheimer was saying, because any time you force a way of thinking or believing, it is less effective. We all as Us citizens will no longer take pleasure in our nation because we really love our country, rather we will love our country because we certainly have no additional choice or else we will be reprimanded. I as well believe that the federal government was very conniving with regards to introducing this kind of authoritarian patriotism right after 9/11 when everyone was hurt and vulnerable. I cannot help but think that that they purposely waited until a thing tragic occurred to inflict this way of thinking onto to children because that they know as time moves along the more people began to problem authority, through instilling this mentality although they are youthful, you do not have to consider them while they are more mature and have a developed an adult conscience. When reading, I also quickly related the authoritarian patriotism to aged Great Britain by which if anyone compared the ruler, he or she will be punished to get treason consequently forcing everyone to comply or end up being punished. However, what is strange in it all is, is or is this not the thing that they we needed freedom by? Did we all or would we not really fight for freedom of this unjust mindset? I assume it is obvious to say history has a way of repeating itself.
