Puritans vs. Native Americans Essay
In 1608, a group of Christian separatists from the Church of England fled to the Holland and then to the “New World” in search of the liberty to practice all their fundamentalist kind of Christianity (dubbed Puritanism). The group of people known as the Native Americans (or American Indians) are the original inhabitants in the Northern and Southern American continents who also are believed to obtain migrated throughout the Bering area bridge coming from Asia about 30, 500 years ago. The moment these two communities collided, a lot of enforced ideology, oppression and guerrilla combat were commenced. The great boundaries of religion, values and world-views are the 3 main factors which lead to the culture clash between the Puritans and the Native Americans. Religion performed a very important role in both Puritan and Native American society, though their ideologies differed tremendously. According to Puritan philosophy, God experienced chosen a choose number of people to sign up him in heaven while his choose. The Natives, on the other hand, believed that everybody was the same; no person was a lot better than anyone else. Since Sitting Bull once stated, “Each guy is good in [the Great Spirit’s] eyesight. (Quotes from our Native Past). This theory was in direct conflict together with the Puritan’s perspective. The means through which the beliefs of such two groups were continued also differed greatly. The Puritans had their Scriptures which in depth their whole religion and held the answers for all possible questions. The Native Americans alternatively relied upon oral transmitting of their theology. Thus, even though the Puritans a new constant place to turn to if they wanted to find out what they assumed, Native Americans had been forced to fill in the blanks between tales they had read when it came to their particular basic beliefs. This feature made both of them unable to relate with one another. The most prominent difference between the two religions were their gods. The Puritans believed in one God and one God only. The Native Americans, even though also worshipping their own luminous “Great Nature, ” had taken further view for all living (and when living) points, worshipping the trees and their ancestors along with their omnipotent Tirawa (or Wakan Tanka). The Puritans, holding almost all aspects of the Bible textual and as keen mandate, saw this worship of creatures other than all their God while idolatry (which was in clear violation in the first commandment). Therefore , the Puritans held the Local American contemporary society as a contemporary society wallowing in sin. Desprovisto was the basis for another big hurdle in Puritan/Indian associations; their differing sets of ethical and honest values. The Puritans highly valued their trust above whatever else. They thought that their conviction intended for God held precedence above anything else. Even their actions were of less consequence than all their faith. The Native Americans, on the other hand, lived all their faith and used their particular actions because tools of their beliefs. Traditions like preparing food and grooving were most actions supplying veneration towards the spirits of nature. Puritans also supported the buying and selling of property, a practice completely foreign to the Natives. As Crazy Horse explained, “One is not purchased the land people walk on” (Quotes from out Native Past). As for the augmentation of terrain, using natural methods and “beautification” of the terrain (which the Puritans required part of and advocated), the Paiute American indian Wovoka was quoted, “You ask me to plow the ground. Shall I have a knife and tear at my personal mother’s mama? Then when I actually die she is going to not take myself to her bosom to rest. Anyone asks me to dig to get stones! Shall I burrow under her skin pertaining to bones? Then when I pass away I cannot get into her physique to be delivered again. You ask me to slice the turf and produce hay promote it and stay rich just like white males, but how dare I cut my mother’s curly hair? ” (Quotes from our Local Past) The Puritans were not able to understand why the Indians viewed all their cultivation with the land because barbarism, as well as the Native Americans were also unable to discover why the Puritans viewed their lack of clothing and deficiency of forced organized worship because savagery. A final, and debatably most important, with the factors bringing about the Indigenous American and Puritan culture clash was the conflict of self and world opinions held by the two groups. The Puritans viewed themselves as problematic and (basically) evil. According to Bald eagle Chief, a Pawnee Indian, “In our minds we could two, great and nasty. ” (Quotes from our Local Past). As well, the Puritans believed which the mortal world was temporary and of tiny consequence. That they believed the only host to significance was your next globe; Heaven or Hell. The Native Americans, alternatively, believed the world that they inhabited was the next universe. They thought that by declining, they simply returned to the earth. With this train of thought, it seems like unlikely that they would be compelled into worship through dread if they will knew that they can were headed home whatever practices they held in life. The Puritans believed in a particular set of faith based ideals, even though the Native Americans a new less conformist view of worship. The Puritans held things like beliefs and make use of the property over the Local Americans’ daily ritual and reverence to get nature. The Puritans considered themselves most evil and considered life as a momentary transition, as the Indians considered themselves since equal halves of good and evil and mortal your life (and their logical successor) as fundamentally the same thing. These three points all contributed to the ethnical conflict that plagued the Native Americans and Caucasians for a long time.
